One Kansas Politician's Musings on Women and Spare Tires
A quick update from the Sunflower State.
The Kansas legislative session is coming to a close, but anti-choice lawmakers made the most of an opportunity to send even more anti-choice legislation to Gov. Sam Brownback.
One extreme bill makes it all but impossible for insurance plans to cover abortion care, thus forcing women to plan for an unplanned pregnancy.
But that's not so bad, says one anti-choice legislator. After all, he keeps a spare tire in his car, which is totally the same thing:
During the House's debate, Rep. Pete DeGraaf, a Mulvane Republican who supports the bill, told [pro-choice Rep. Barbara Bollier]: "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?"Bollier asked him, "And so women need to plan ahead for issues that they have no control over with a pregnancy?"DeGraaf drew groans of protest from some House members when he responded, "I have a spare tire on my car.""I also have life insurance," he added. "I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."
Wow.
Comments like these might give one the impression that Rep. DeGraaf doesn't respect women very much.
If only we could keep a spare legislator around for such occasions!

First, women are relegated to being treated like livestock (via the Wyoming legislation) now we're like vehicles. I wonder if these aholes are ever going to view women as human beings?
First women are relegated to being treated as livestock (via the Wyoming legislature) and now compared to cars. I wonder if these "men" will ever treat women like human beings?
cost of raising a child $222,360.
cost of raising a child for a year $11000
Thats a lot more then I make a year.
cost of tier $35 - $250.
cost of life insurance $500 per year (more or less)
I don't see how this adds up at all.
11000 - (250 + 500) = $10250
Please some one help him with his Math.
Check your bible, God does not prohibit abortion. It took the catholic church and old white men who are too rich to even be serving in the government because they have lost all touch with reality.
Seriously, a Pope first conceived the idea of abortion and men have supported the idea for hundreds of years. Leave our uterus alone and get a life.
Quite frankly, if every man carried spare rubbers at all times, there wouldn't be a need for abortion.
Like my husband said "If men were the ones who had babies, this would never be an issue"!!!!
and a TAX $$$ on the sperm producer????
I have in my car, a tire iron that, on occasions like this, with which to beat the hell out of guys like this, just in case.
I wonder if he would ever adopt a spare set of morals if his wife was raped by a mentally ill minority man. Or his college freshman daughter made a mistake in a night of inexperienced youth. It's so ridiculous how the men want to lay every responsibility of getting or NOT getting pregnant on the woman, but but once the pregnancy is established..all of a sudden they want to call the shots.
Sad, Sad, Sad,
That benighted Republican legislators, ANYWHERE, saying ANY THING that is IGNORANT, STUPID or JUST PLAIN MEAN keep having a chance to embarrass themselves in public. People who vote for these neanderthals should be mailed a disclaimer saying "Whatever Stupid, Ignorant, Mean things we say in the next 2(4 or 6) years (depending on the office), please know that the person printing them probably does not agree with us. Nope, we are Stupid, Ignorant and Mean, all on our own, thank you."
It's close to unfathomable how Republicans can keep sticking both feet, their hands, arms, legs and heads in their mouths given the current discourse around a NATIONAL election! It's just incomprehensible HOW THESE PEOPLE GOT ELECTED BY WHO ARE PROBABLY DECENT PEOPLE OVERALL! Missouri and now its neighbors in Kansas must wonder what was in the Kool Aid with idiocy like this coming out REPEATEDLY from Politicians THEY ELECTED! Ask for your money back. Insist they do something that Takes Care of People. DO SOMETHING TO KEEP THIS KIND OF THINKING FROM COMING TO REPRESENT AMERICA! PLEASE! PRETTY PLEASE? Thank You!
How, oh How, do Republican Voters who, their politics notwithstanding, are probably decent people oversll, elect Neanderthals like this to Represent them. Will they please do whatever they can to keep the rest of the world from believing that Everyone in America ia this Stupid, Mean, Self-Serving, Ignorant and Sexist, not ONE of WHICH is a family value? Please? Pretty Please?
