Yesterday, NARAL Pro-Choice America hosted our Roe v. Wade 38th anniversary luncheon. The event brought together pro-choice stars from the political, activist, and entertainment worlds.

Felicity Huffman, the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning star of ABC's Desperate Housewives, was fantastic as the mistress of ceremonies. Her husband, Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy, made a very special guest appearance. Felicity and William expressed their pro-choice values in a musical number, which featured one of the legendary William H. Macy ukulele solos:

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, rallied the guests by reminding us how the U.S. House of Representatives, led by anti-choice Speaker John Boehner, has already launched extreme attacks on a woman's ability to make personal, private medical decisions:

The 2010 elections focused on economic anxiety, but Boehner and his allies are moving ahead with an extreme anti-choice agenda. They have gone from trying to redefine rape to allowing hospitals to refuse to provide abortion care to women who will die without it.

Nancy also talked about the importance of engaging pro-choice Millennials--Americans born after 1980. (That's me!) We're the largest and most diverse generation in our country's history, and it will be up to us to stop the John Boehners of the future:

Here's the good news: this generation is more pro-choice than the country overall. In fact, younger men are even more pro-choice than younger women. However, their experiences are different from many of ours in this room. To win the hearts and minds of this generation, we must listen to and learn from them--and that means how we talk about our values could change.

We do all of this work for one reason: We want every woman to be able to make personal decisions without political interference.

Hear, hear!

Kamala Harris, the new attorney general of California and a rising pro-choice star, keynoted. We were blown away, and are so glad to have Kamala fighting for women in California. Check back here on Blog for Choice for the wrap-up of Kamala's speech!

Several of our pro-choice champions in Congress joined us, including Reps. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, and Jerrold Nadler of New York. We depend on them day in and day out to protect our rights and fight back against Boehner and his ilk, and we're grateful they could join us.
