Boehner's First Day as Speaker: We're Ready
Today, John Boehner was sworn in as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the most powerful anti-choice voice in America.
Boehner is the man who recently told Americans United for Life - an extremist anti-choice group - that he "wanted to be the most pro-life Speaker ever."
Well, Boehner didn't wait for a swearing-in ceremony to begin attacking a woman's right to choose. Yesterday, he announced that the House will vote on a bill to repeal the health-reform law on January 12. Boehner also scheduled a vote on a resolution threatening a dozen major changes to the new health-care law, which could include a Stupak-like ban on abortion coverage.
When it comes to anti-choice politicians hell-bent on taking away a woman's right to choose, Boehner's in the big leagues. He's been in Congress for 20 years now, and has cast 142 anti-choice votes. He's never cast a single pro-choice vote - not even for sex education or birth control. And now that he's in power, his top priority is creating an America where women don't have the power to make personal, private medical decisions.
Boehner has wasted no time in gathering some extreme, anti-choice allies to bolster his agenda. His staff even held a meeting with Randall Terry in November. Yes, that Randall Terry--the Randall Terry who called for the execution of abortion providers.
With 246 anti-choice members of the House willing to do his bidding, we knew Boehner's attacks would come fast and furious. But we're ready for them.
