Nancy Keenan on MSNBC, Talks About Stupak-Pitts Amendment
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan was on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports" this afternoon. She talked about the effects of the Stupak-Pitts amendment to the health-care reform bill, and how we are going to keep fighting.

This interview is outrageous. How could Nancy Keenan and the NARAL leadership not see this coming? They should have had every pro-choice person in the country marching on Washington. NARAL didn't successfully lobby a single vote against passage of the Stupak-amended bill. How do I know? Becuase the ENTIRE Pro-Choice Caucus voted the way House leadership wanted.
Nancy Keenan was asked repeatedly if she supports killing the bill if the Stupak amendement stays. SHE WOULD NOT COMMIT. That's outrageous for the most promoninent pro-choice organization in the country. That's like the ADL saying they're okay with discrimination against Jewish people as long as it keeps moving the Democratic party agenda moving forward. Oust Nancy Keenan! Either she's bought and paid for by Democratic Party operatives or she's totally incompetent!
Lol. Way to go NARAL, bunch of sell outs. lol. B Mull, she's both. Anyone who would endorse Obama over Clinton is a joke.
This is such a stupid interview. I like how now the pro-choice establishment - after the bill has passed the house - will start to fight the fight. What an awesome "advocacy group" this is!
Nancy Keenan is quite an ineffectual leader and more committed to sucking up to powerful players in the Democratic Party than fighting tooth and nail for abortion rights - I especially like how she argues for preserving the "status quo" instead of stressing the need for abortion rights and abortion coverage. I thought the endorsement of Lieberman over Ned Lamont was her lowest point, but clearly she has repeatedly found ways to fall lower and lower.
The Stupak Amendment doesn't take away the "rights" of women, it only recognizes the rights of the unborn.
Hey Tim, you think about the "rights" of the unborn, the next time you eat eggs. Same thing, buddy. An unborn fetus doesn't even start to develop as a human until well after 3 months.
And what about the rights of women?!? If it were men who got pregnant, abortion rights would have been a done deal a long time ago.
Sarah, ex-Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson would disagree with you rather strongly:

The rushpiglican attempt to stop women's choice for abortion care only reveals to what extent poor little threatened mama baby boys will go to control the women in the United States. They are mad and pouting, most likely verbally abusive to the women in their lives because of their anger, and aggressively asserting themselves as "the boss man". It will back fire, stupak will have to eat the paper his bill is printed on and the Senate will hammer out the acceptability compromise, that women have the right to purchase an abortion insurance rider if they are on a public health insurance plan. The overwhelming rushpiglican vote will backfire on the big boys and galvanize the public.
What monsters these people are. They would use abortion to derail health care. They don't give a damn about women, children or health care. We have always had abortion on demand in this country; we do hospitals now instead of garages. If Stupak and his stooges have their way we will go back to the garage. Do these people actually think that they are important enough to stop desperate women from taking desperate action? Someone should tell them to get a bloody grip. Women will die in the mean streets and dirty allies of this nation for a religious/philosophical position they may not even share. That is government intervention of the first water. These people who are so concerned about the unborn, might do well to worry about our infant mortality rate – it is one of the highest in the world thanks to our greed based health care delivery system. What conclusion do we draw from this – the unborn are important, but once they are crowned to hell with them? All I have to say is get your damned religion out of my government.
Hello,
There is no differents between take birth control and abortion. If a woman take birth control she saying she doesn't want children and the same for abortion. That her body she and she alone says what happens with her body.
These Pro Lifers don't care because that don't know the woman how can they act in her intrest. This Country rejected welfare which wasn't enough to better a family's life. i.e. college, food on the table when unemployed, and so on. As a Country we abort criminals with the death sentence. Abortion wasn't around when the Bible was written how can it say its wrong.
What Ms. Keenan does not tell you is that the federal government has never subsidized the 85% of the plans that cover abortion. Without Stupak, federal dollars would have been used to subsidize those insurance plans in the exchange. Not a hard concept to understand. And... there is already talk about insurance companies creating two plans... one that is in the exchange (cheaper, subsidized and does not cover abortions) and one that is not in the exchange (exactly what we have now... a plan not subsidized with federal dollars). Very, very simple. Though Ms. Keenan does not want you to know that.
She also states she will "have every woman call Harry Ried"...That means she will have every planned parenthood employee man the phones. The abortion industry doesn't have a grass roots movement. The only people that participate are the ones getting paid. Sad. Sorry 71%+ of Americans don't want their public dollars used to fund abortions... that includes insurance plans subsidized by the federal government.
I was very disappointed that Nancy wouldn't admit to Andrea Mitchell that, YES, Nancy Pelosi betrayed women and the Democratic party, which is officially pro-choice, by deciding that women's rights to have their medical insurance fund their own personal healthcare decisions were expendable in the healthcare bill. Some change we can believe in. Stupak is unacceptable, but even Hyde shouldn't be allowed to stay status quo, and it puzzles me why a so-called pro-choice President and a Democratic party in power would be so eager to reassure that they will maintain the status quo that discriminates against poor women.
I have sent money to the Democrat party to support this bill but no more after the Stupak bill was passed. I am going to become independant. If congress is so concerned about abortion, why haven't they seen to it that birth control is cheap enough for women to afford.? Why have they not passed a bill requiring that any man who has two children and not paying child support have a vasectomy?.They don't mind telling women what to do but, they don't have the gonads to pass a law requiring a man to have a vasectomy. Today, women who aren't married and have children are required to get a job,and if it is minium wage the government sudsidies her baby sitting fees. Why aren't men required to do the same? A lot of women in this country are too young to remember in the 50's and 60's that women would use any method possible to abort themselves and lot of them died in the process. When I was in high school one of my classmates got pregnant and her mother made her drink turpentine every morning trying to make her abort, she was so sick she could not eat her lunch. She never did abort ,can you image what kind of mentality that child had? Is this what the people of this country want to see? If people in this country is so concerned about children, why have we not passed tougher laws on child rapers. There is not a cure for a baby raper. When men rape a child it tears up the baby's insides,if they live through it they are usual infertile and most of the time they die.Children die every day from abuse and society sits on their behind and watch the abusers get a slap on the wrist. I know because I worked in a Jail.Society says they care but, their actions speak louder than words.
