Dr. Carhart in the News
Why are we holding our virtual rally to support Dr. LeRoy Carhart today? Don't reproductive health-care providers need our support every day? They do. But today and tomorrow are special.
Since Dr. Tiller's murder in May, the extreme anti-choice group Operation Rescue has switched its attention to other clinics. Today and tomorrow they're targeting Dr. Carhart in Nebraska. Women who enter the clinic could face taunts, harassment, and intimidation from anti-choice protestors. Rachel Maddow recently spoke out about the protests and interviewed Dr. Carhart. Take a look:
Dr. Carhart held a press conference this morning, and NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Executive Director Emilie Ailts presented a statement on behalf of the NARAL network:
We look forward to a day when violent protests are a vestige of the past; when all women are trusted to make the personal health-care decisions that are best for them and their families; and when courageous and caring physicians like Dr. Carhart are free from the threats of violence and intimidation.
Members of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota are also in Nebraska to help counter the protests.
Of course most of us can't make it to show our support in person. That's why we're holding the virtual rally today to show our support for Dr. Carhart, his patients, and all reproductive health-care providers. We hope you'll join us!

While you drummed up a lot of hype in this video and blog post, never once did you furnish any concrete evidence of hate, violence, or terrorism on the part of pro-life protesters.
You see, much like Operation Rescue in Nebraska this weekend, Randall Terry was not engaging in hate, violence, or terrorism. He was simply exercising his First Amendment rights to say something you disagree with. You attempt to invalidate him using inaccurate and extreme language because you want to shut him up. Why? Because if you shut him up you don't have to logically counter Terry's argument (that abortion constitutes child murder), and if you don't have to logically counter Terry's argument you don't have to ask yourself this tough question: DOES abortion, in fact, constitute child murder?
Anyone with a bit of decency, common sense, and knowledge of basic human biology knows that the answer to this question is a resounding yes. The only objective beginning to human life is at conception. This is when a genetically distinct human person is formed. Implantation, sentience, point of consciousness, viability, or any other purported point of life's beginning all prove far too subjective in a rational, biologically sound debate.
One would think that facts like "heartbeat at 18 days" would be enough for you to realize that abortion is murder. Nevertheless, you insist on aborting children at six, seven, eight, and even nine months. This is especially surprising since even the most superficial person can see the obvious physical resemblance between a late term baby and a baby outside the womb. Furthermore, even a person of low intelligence can recognize the irony of how in some hospitals one baby born prematurely at seven months is rushed to an intensive care unit while another of the same age is aborted one wing over.
This brings me to another central part of the abortion debate; the pictures of late term abortions much like the ones I suspect Carhart performs. Please see this link from the Center for Bioethical Reform: http://bit.ly/14uQun. You call these pictures "gory" and say they are "scare tactics." Yes, they are gory. However, being gory doesn't mean that something suddenly loses its validity. For example, pictures of genocides, murder, and human rights abuses the world over are not immediately rejected on the grounds that they are "gory."
These pictures are also medically verifiable. So no, they aren't "scare tactics." They simply contain a truth you don't want to face. Thus, you try to do the same thing to the pictures of late term abortions as you do to Randall Terry and Operation Rescue: Invalidate them and sweep them under the rug.
You can attempt to strip the pro-life movement of its validity via slanderous speech about its members or flat out denial of its logic. Either way, you'll have to face the facts eventually. Abortion kills children! And we refuse to be intimidated into shutting up about it.
Gracious. Methinks "N/A" doth protest too much. At the risk of inviting another seven frothy paragraphs of proselytizing, I would like to ask one simple question: who on earth is "intimidating" you? You people are the ones who kill doctors, bomb clinics, post photos and address information of doctors and staff and patients online. Whereas, our side? Um, you know. We want to go to our doctors and be left alone in peace to do it.
Looking forward to your overwrought response...
It sounds to me as if N/A does not understand the reasons WHY late-term abortions are performed. It seems as if he is one of the many who ignorantly thinks that late-term abortions are performed on women who suddenly decide just before their due dates that they don't want to have a baby after all. This is simply not the case. NO woman would ever make that decision after voluntarily remaining pregnant for almost 9 months. This is one of the issues that I will be speaking out about during my upcoming year as a pageant queen, and this is definitely an issue that we need to educate the general public about. Late-term abortions are performed on women when SOMETHING HAS GONE WRONG WITH THEIR PREGNANCY. Either the pregnancy has taken a dangerous turn, the child is found to have a serious or deadly disease/deformity, or the mother suddenly becomes seriously ill and her pregnancy is complicating her illness. The Pro-Choice Movement needs to make every effort to get the word out and do everything they can to educate the public on the facts about WHY late-term abortions are performed. And yes, the photos of late-term abortions being touted around by anti-choice protesters are gory. There is no question about that. Late-term abortions ARE gory, but they are also NECESSARY in some cases. We all know that sometimes we have to do things or go through things that are extremely unpleasant but are in our best interests.
After all the arguments the facts remain. Abortion is killing. I can see no way around that. Back in the hilarious late sixties, I thought abortion was the answer to many of my sisters' problems. Alas, we have killed close to 50 million babies, and for what? so we can enjoy promiscuous sex without fearing the consequences. Nearly all abortions take place for that reason.
Where is NARAL's condemnation of James Pouillon? While holding a sign as part of a pro-life demonstration, he was murdered by Harlan Drake because he was "irritated by the pro-life demonstration." This blatant hypocrisy from the pro-abortion crowd is unbelievable. Unfortunately, our government officials (where was Obama's condemnation) and lack of media attention to this issue allows pro-abortion groups, like NARAL, to get a pass on hypocrisy.
First off, having a baby doesn't make you responsible. 2nd of, although I think abortion should ALWAYS be safe, legal, and an obtainable option. 3rd trimester abortions should be avoided at all costs, but should still be legal and safe. I think Pro Choicers, and Pro Lifers, need to come together and find a way to educate people accurately and efficently so that the need for abortion reduces. For example, why not propose a bill that mandate public schools in ALL US states to teach sex ed? That's just 1 example.
N/A- Those pictures are gory and graphic and I think it is absolutely ridiculous and insane to be holding them up as people drive by with children in their car. You think it's necessary for children to see that on their way to the store?
I am 100% Pro-Choice. I think there are enough cases in this country/world about babies being microwaved or tortured when they are OUTSIDE the womb, by mothers who never wanted them to begin with. You want more cases of neglect and abuse? Then ban abortion. You anti-choicers are so one-sided. And blind.
