Twitter and the Supreme Court Vacancy: The Contest
The whole world has gone Twitter crazy. These days, it's everywhere. Oprah's tweeting. Ashton Kutcher's tweeting. News reporters are tweeting. Congressional representatives are tweeting... Heck, your mom is probably tweeting. Twitter is everywhere.
Twitter is a tool that's influencing public policy debates, so why can't it influence a Supreme Court vacancy?
EXACTLY. That's why NARAL Pro-Choice America is launching the first-ever (that we know of) Twitter contest to name a pro-choice hashtag for the Supreme Court battle that's just around the corner.
Twitter what? Hashtag who? Have we lost you already? Probably not, because our pro-choice activists have already proven to be incredibly tech-savvy! Buuuuuuut, just in case, you can watch this video on the basics of Twitter.
What is a hashtag? A hashtag is a very popular way of categorizing your Twitter post (aka tweet) - anybody can make up or use any hashtag on her/his tweets and it's easy to find all of the tweets that use a hashtag.
Got it? Great, now onto the contest.
Here's the gist: We need your help to create a hashtag for all pro-choice Supreme Court tweets. Starting right now, 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, you have 24 hours to tweet us your suggestions for to what that hashtag should be. Maybe it's #choosejustice, maybe it's #prochoiceSCOTUS, or maybe it's #pcSCOTUS justice. Who knows, but chances are - you're more creative than we are!
Then, we will put our favorite three to a vote, with the winning choice becoming the official pro-choice Supreme Court hashtag! Plus, as if that wasn't enough, we'll send the winner a pro-choice swag in a goodie bag.
It's that easy. Just log-on to your Twitter account and send us your ideas by tweeting them to @NARAL. Example:
Here's my @NARAL pro-choice hashtag idea: #choosejustice
Easy peasy.
Obviously, we need help getting the word out. If you're on Twitter, please tweet the following message:
Pls RT: Contest! Reply @naral w/ ideas 4 pro-choice SupremeCourt hashtag. Vote 2morrow. GoodieBag 4 winning idea #fem2 #p2 #souter #scotus
... so all of your followers can learn about the contest. If you're not on Twitter, consider signing up here. It's free, and then you can follow NARAL Pro-Choice America's feed and make your suggestion.
If you have additional questions, please leave them in the comment section and we'll address them ASAP. Otherwise... ready, set, tweet your suggestions because the 24-hour time limit begins now!

Great idea! I know what we'll be talking about over dinner tonight ... the suggestions coming in so far are good, it'll be interesting to see what else people come up with!
