My Friend, Dr. Susan Wicklund
I'd like to tell you about my friend Dr. Susan Wicklund, and then I have a favor to ask.
Dr. Wicklund provides reproductive-health care to women in my home state of Montana, and she is deeply dedicated to choice. She has driven as many as 352 miles one way to see patients at a women's health clinic in Kalispell (that's the distance from Washington DC to Cleveland, OH!). She and her staff endure the shouts of anti-choice protestors who come to intimidate patients, many of whom have driven for hours to get to their appointments.
In fear of her own safety, Dr. Wicklund frequently wears a bulletproof vest to work.
But Dr. Wicklund keeps fighting on. She recently opened a new clinic in Montana, which will bring reproductive-health choice to many more women in the state.
So here's where the favor comes in. The work that Dr. Wicklund and her staff do is exhausting, and they face so much negativity every day, including anti-choice protesters outside their doors. I know it would mean a lot to them to hear some words of support.
Would you please write a thank you note to Dr. Wicklund? It doesn't need to be fancy, just let her know that you appreciate the care she and her staff provide to women.
Here are a few things people have said already:
- "I think you are an absolutely awesome person to do what you do, and never give up."
- "I honor your devotion to Women's choice."
- "Thanks to you, Dr. Wicklund, for all that you are doing in bringing good care to those who are in need."
Please write a note of support to Dr. Wicklund and her staff today. She (and I) would both really appreciate it. Thank you!

To Susan Wicklund & Staff, I just finished reading Dr. Wicklund's riveting book. I am a boomer, 59yo,an RN, I live 5 months a year is Whitefish MT, just north of Kalispel. I have always been fervently pro-choice, no exceptions. As a young mother of 2, living in Portland OR while my husband did a 4 yr Oral Surgery residency, I spent a year working at Lovejoy Surgicenter--a provider of abortions up to 16 wks. I was mostly a nurse-counselor, occasionally working the proceedure room. I too had to endure the harassment of the antis, look at their vicious signs and listen to their hysterical screaming.
Thank heavens there are souls like all of you who are there for women and young girls with unwanted pregnancies. I find it so ironic that the most rabid and violent antis are often men, men who will NEVER have to grapple with the devastating issues an unwanted pregnancy always creates. They never have to worry about how they are going to support the child, finish their education, or even afford an abortion or have go through it, often alone. Yet they make our laws, evaporate our rights and generally make every aspect of this problem thousands of times worse than it has to be. Talk about Angels of Mercy--you are all Angels of Mercy!
Thankfully, I never endured the anguish of an unwanted pregnancy but it was only out of luck. Most of the women I know have had abortions and women will continue to get abortions, legal or not. It has been with us forever so why not keep it safe and legal? Why not let women decide--forever??
Anyway, thank all of you for what you do. You know how grateful the women are that you help. You know. Would love to meet you sometime if you ever get to Kalispel! Very sincerely, Ellie Q.
I would love to volunteer in your organization if needed. I had been helped 20 years ago by Dr Wicklund. I think she is brave and a blessing to many. If there are any types of support I could offer, even help ease the stress of single women coming in, I would love to do so. Please contact me if you could use me, Julie 257-7979
I'm a pre-medical student and I am re-reading Dr. Wicklund's book, This Common Secret for the third time. I sometimes wonder if I would have the strength and conviction to do what Dr. Wicklund does on a daily basis. I certainly hope so because she's definitely my hero!
