Palin on Roe v. Wade (Charlie Gibson interview)

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

Friday on ABC News Gov. Sarah Palin reiterated her call for the overturn of Roe v. Wade and her opposition to abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

There are two additional parts of her response that require further examination:

First, Palin said that overturning Roe would move the debate over reproductive rights back to the states. Donna Crane, policy director for NARAL Pro-Choice America, can fill you in on how 23 states are poised to ban abortion if Roe is reversed. That's 46 percent of all states.

Second, Palin's claim that she and McCain would work with lawmakers who disagree with them on the issue of abortion contradicts McCain's 25-year record of voting against improving women's access to birth control, which is the best way to prevent unintended pregnancy and therefore reduce the need for abortion.

Via RH Reality Check:

It seems odd to respect other people's "opinions" on the issue of Roe, but not respect their "choices."  Repealing Roe v. Wade will not stop abortion, only make criminals of women who seek them. Women will be hurt most by not being able to make the best private medical decision for themselves and their families. On the issue of adoption, while everyone can agree it is one important choice, it is a far better talking point, for politicians in both parties, than it is an actual reality in the lives of most women with unintended pregnancies.

That's why NARAL Pro-Choice America created this web video (now viewed over 28,000 times since Friday)!  We must educate our friends and family and spread the word about how extreme the McCain-Palin views are with regards to reproductive rights.
