McCain blasts Obama, then NARAL Pro-Choice America blasts McCain
I know it may seem like this Blog is a broken-record when it comes to the elections:
McCain = BAD ANTI-CHOICER, Obama = GOOD PRO-CHOICER!
And I get that, but I also know that the second we assume people know the McCain is anti-choice is the second we get another four years of an anti-choice presidency... so I, for one, will not let up.
Take, for example, last Friday's AP article, "McCain blasts Obama for women's rights criticism." Evidently, McCain doesn't like being publically called out for his dismal record on judicial appointments. Well, that's too bad.
Over on the Obama campaign's blog community, Ann Brewer hits the highlights (erm, lowlights?) of McCain's record and philosophy on judges:
In short, if you want to know about McCain's philosophy on judges, just ask right-wing activist Gary Bauer:
"I wanted a commitment from either George Bush or John McCain that if elected he would appoint pro-life judges to the Supreme Court... Bush said he had no litmus test, and his judges would be strict constructionists. But McCain, in private, assured me he would appoint pro-life judges."
- Gary Bauer, a social conservative politician who endorsed McCain in his 2000 presidential bid, The New Yorker, May 2005
See how critical it is that NARAL Pro-Choice America is there to correct misinformation and spread the word?
Remember, you can help! You can start by telling your friends that Sen. Obama is pro-choice by sending them an e-card!

Wouldn't sending people a post card stating Obama is pro-choice be lying to them? You do not know
where Obama stands on women's issues. We know he does not respect women. We know he will say anything to get elected. He does not believe in equal pay for women. He is changing his mind on Roe vs Wade, kinda sorta. He doesn't know. What has be ever done for the women's movement? He is another George Bush. When Bush was running for President his supporters worshipped him, he represented hope and change and a new kind of politics. Now Obama is being marketed the same way and the democrats are falling for it. Don't know that McCain will be any better. I feel betrayed by the democrats because I expected so much more from them. When you have to steal votes from one candidate to help your candidate win then you become republican. When you have to demean and degrade women and play the race card to get the nomination you are using republican tactics. All democrats should be protesting. How far we have fallen. Can we even go any lower?
Agree, Julie. Obama just said he opposes mental health exemptions for abortions after the first trimester. This runs counter to NARAL's postion. I guess they didn't vet this panderer Obama very well.
Obama got your endorsement and moved on.
In a recent interview, Obama appears to back away from his long-stated positions on abortion (and a proposed federal abortion rights law he had co-sponsored), repudiate 35 years of accepted Supreme Court rulings on the issue and embrace a view on abortion restrictions that has been expressed on the Court only by Justices Thomas and Scalia.
Obama's remarks are printed verbatim in the interview, published yesterday in Relevant Magazine. Read them — there's no mistaking that Obama says he no longer will support what's long been a cornerstone of the abortion rights debate: The Court's insistence that laws banning abortions after the fetus is viable (now about 22 weeks) contain an exception to allow doctors to perform them if necessary to protect a pregnant woman's mental health.

I'm a psychologist. Severe depression or psychosis can result in suicide, which is just as fatal as a "physical" illness such as cancer. Just as Obama has lately changed his mind about a number of positions, NARAL can change its mind too and endorse the true pro-choice candidate, Hillary Clinton.
It would seem that Obama doesn't think that 'mental distress' justifies late term abortions...or he didn't think anybody would notice these comments in some right wing holy roller rag over the past weekend...I'm not sure which is the more alarming of the two.

My position and the position of many other life-long supports of the Pro Choice movement is fairly simple: RvW is the law of the land...period...no abridgements, no second guessing...keep your sexist opinions to yourself...and that includes Obama.
I have been a life long, faithful, straight ticket Dem for 35 years...not anymore...I'm a PUMA member, not a right wing Rep activist, I'm not voting for McCain and I won't be voting for Obama. NARALs support of Obama over Hillary (a woman who has supported you longer than I have)was a direct insult to a all pro choice women. The comments quoted in this article indicate that a) you didn't do your homework very well b) your willingness to pick the lesser of the two evils we are now left with undermines your ability to meet your stated goals of protecting a woman's right to choose and c)your money and your influence with regard to this issue don't seem to have had much of an impact on Obama.
Good job.
NARAL--it's not too late...you can withdraw and rescind your support for Obama and put it squarely behind the only candidate trustworthy on women's issues: the woman!
Obama has had the nomination for only one month and has changed his mind on several key issues. Iraq, NAFTA, FISA, and abortion. How can you trust him with your choice?
It's not too late to return the lies Obama told you and back the only honest candidate, Hillary Clinton.
NARAL should be ashamed of their endorsement of Obama.
Ok first I have not been on this site since the day after NARAL endorced Obama but I had to come back to night to say what IDIOTS NARAL are for endorcing Obama. I can not believe they choose him over Hillary when he has less female staff and pays them $6000.00 less than men. He say women with mental problems can ot have abortions? WTF!!!! I do so hope that you are happy with your canadate of choice because he is becoming no choice at all, he will do or say to get the vote and you were stupid enough to belive him. I hope you are happy that I will be voting for McCain to keep the idiot out of the White House. I am voting for McCain to teach the idiots out there what we can lose if it was anyone other than McCain. McCain will not pudh the womans issues because he wants us and respects us but if a true conservative were in there like Huckabee we would lose everything we had gained because of your stupid decision to support Obama. I am so glad I gave up on NARAL they will never get another cent out of me forever.
MCCAIN KNOWS HOW HE FEEL ABOUT THE MATTER ,IT SHOULDN'T BE A MATTER OF CHECKING HIS ON RECORD UNLESS IT CHANGES EVERYTIME HE VOTES. THE WOMEN WHO SAID THEY WOULD FOR HIM BECAUSE THEIR CANIDATE WAS NOT NOMINATED ,SHOULD ALSO BE AWARE THAT HE IS ALSO THAT MCCAIN IS IN FAVOR OF RECINDING ROE V.WADE , WHAT MAYBE DONE IN SPITE MAKE WORK AGAINST YOU. MCCAIN WOULD MORE THEN LIKELY APPOINT A CONSERVATIVE JUDGE AND OBAMA WOULD MORE THEN LIKELY APPOINT A LIBERAL JUDGE.
