McCain Playing Games with Choice: Guess Who?
It's all fun and games until someone loses their rights. This is the first in our "McCain Playing Games with Choice" series - where we'll highlight a specific area of McCain's anti-choice record each month.
This month, Amber and Andrea play Guess Who? with McCain's anti-family planning record.
Like many anti-choicers, McCain opposes a woman's right to choose, yet votes against common sense solutions to preventing unintended pregnancy. McCain:
-
Voted to terminate the Title X family-planning program, which provides millions of women with health-care services ranging from birth control to breast cancer screenings. Nice.
-
Voted against funding teen-pregnancy prevention programs. Sweet.
-
Said he was "stumped" about whether or not contraception helps stop the spread of HIV. I have no words.
Check out how he stacks up to Sen. Obama on family planning (hint: Obama wins) and Beth Shipp's blog on the Huffington Post.
If you have trouble viewing this video, you can watch on our YouTube channel.
Remember to keep spreading the word about McCain's anti-choice record so he doesn't get a chance to play games with our lives.

A woman's right to choose is obviously very important and who do you trust to guard that right? If Hillary Clinton were running for President, that would be a no-brainer. McCain is a man of his word and his actions back his words up. Barack Obama has never been a public servant and has no actions to back up anything he says. Both McCain and Clinton hire more women and pay them better then Obama. Who in their right mind would trust Obama to fight for women's rights?
"On average, women working in Obama's Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That's according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama's Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one -- Obama's administrative manager -- was a woman.
The average pay for the 33 men on Obama's staff (who earned more than $23,000, the lowest annual salary paid for non-intern employees) was $59,207. The average pay for the 31 women on Obama's staff who earned more than $23,000 per year was $48,729.91. (The average pay for all 36 male employees on Obama's staff was $55,962; and the average pay for all 31 female employees was $48,729. The report indicated that Obama had only one paid intern during the period, who was a male.)"
And then Obama got a haircut instead of marching in the GLBT pride parade.
If he is this allegedly enlightened and progressive candidate, he should have EASILY found the time in an admittedly harried schedule to show solidarity with our GLBT friends. It's merely the latest self-provided evidence that Sen. Obama does not share the inclusive sexuality views of this organization, myself and other backers.
During the packed primary season, he attempted to organize the South with Rev. Donnie McClurkin, who insisted that GLBT people can and should change their sexuality to heterosexual.
Again, why does NARAL want to associate with somebody who has such an unhealthy and unprogressive view of human sexuality? THe problem is not the sexuality, it is the discrimination which people face!
There can be no compromise.
Obama has made it very clear that he does not respect women. Why would any self-respecting woman vote for him. You cannot honestly say where Obama stands on any issue because he changes his mind depending on who he is talking to. Women deserve better than this If you don't want to vote McCain vote Cynthia McKinney, Green Party.
Well you ladies seem to have some very strong feelings regarding presidential nominee Barack Obama. I was just curious whether you were indeed going to vote for McCain or are you just going to continue complaining about Obama not being your ideal choice in the hopes that it will somehow bring Clinton back on the bill. That seems to be the problem with dems these days. he was not the one you wanted but you are too stubborn to see that he still holds your values regardless of how much emphasis he places on it. stop being petty.
I'm pretty sure you didn't see McCain marching in the LGBT parade, either. And hmmm you never will.
Hey Robin, Julie, and pat
You know that anti-gay marriage initiative in California? Obama has come out against it.
"As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same-sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination. And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.
For too long, issues of LGBT rights have been exploited by those seeking to divide us. It's time to move beyond polarization and live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect. This is no less than a core issue about who we are as Democrats and as Americans.
Finally, I want to congratulate all of you who have shown your love for each other by getting married these last few weeks. My thanks again to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club for allowing me to be a part of today's celebration. I look forward to working with you in the coming months and years, and I wish you all continued success."
McCain, eager to court far right lunatic voters, is supporting it.
Ron,
Obama may have come out against the anti-gay marriage initative today but that isn't what he said in the past. Remember Donnie McClurkin, who insisted that GLBT people can and should change their sexuality to heterosexual. You can't honestly say what Obama stands for because it changes depending on the day and who he is talking to. He always talks out both sides of his mouth.
Where does Obama stand on Roe vs Wade? I understand he is changing his position. He is now somewhat against it.
Obama cannot be trusted. He lies. He will say whatever he has to to get elected. Isn't that what Obama supporters said about Hillary. Why aren't these same people going after Obama for all his pandering to the republicans. Before it all ends, Obama will be more republican than McCain.
Eliza,
Can i have a picture of obama marching in a gay parade? thanks.

Melissa,
I get what you're saying, and I'm with you. It would be fabulous to have a candidate who marched for LGBT rights. However, woudln't it also be great to have one who wouldn't further take them away, as McCain would do? We can't keep wishing for a fantasy world where we have a kickass liberal president that isn't afraid to stand up for gay rights and womens rights and the environment, etc. We have two candidates: one that will stand up for these things in office, and one who will attack them. It's time to face reality and get behind the BEST candidate still out there instead of tearing him down. If you want to vote for McCain out of spite, you're putting the nail in your own damn coffin.
