A note on the Republican debate last night
Right before the debate started last night, I said to my boyfriend: "You know, I really hope someone asks these guys how much jail time they think women who've had abortions should get."
This is the one question that anti-choicers seem to avoid, knowing that the idea of throwing women in jail won't play well with the public. So the new--and misleading--answer we seem to be hearing a lot is that women shouldn't get any jail time, only doctors should, because women don't know what they're doing. So...either we're evil or we're moral children who don't understand that when we get an abortion we're getting an abortion? Please.
My wish was answered--someone posed the question to the candidates--but predictably not one of them really answered the question. Let's hear it: would the candidates throw women in jail for having an abortion? And as Amanda says: "I think no human being can be so stupid as to think that you can ban an act without enforcing the ban if you want it to work." So let's hear the truth this time.
