Rape victim thrown in jail, denied EC
You've got to love a system that allows a rape survivor to be thrown in jail after reporting the assault.
A young woman was raped by a man who grabbed her as she was walking to her car from a local parade. After she called police and reported the crime, it was discovered that she had an arrest warrant out for her.
It was from an arrest when the woman was a juvenile and she was accused of not paying restitution. The woman says she was not aware there was a warrant out for her, and her attorney says it appears to be a paperwork error."They were more interested in prosecuting her for something that's a paperwork snafu from four years ago, that was juvenile. They were more interested in working on that than finding an experienced rapist," stated the victim's mother.
Still, the woman was put in handcuffs and taken to jail. She was not allowed bond, and the medical staff at the jail refused to give her the Morning After Pill even though it had been prescribed at the hospital.
Apparently the medical supervisor at the jail wouldn't allow her to take EC because it was against her religion.
"So, here we have a medical supervisor imposing her beliefs on a rape victim," said attorney Virlyn Moore. "As a human being, how someone could be so violated by this monster and then the system comes along and rapes her again psychologically and emotionally - it's outrageous and unconscionable."
The young woman was arrested on a Saturday, and wasn't able to leave jail until Monday afternoon. After being raped. Just sit on that one for a while. Unbelievable.

What a nightmare. Does she have an attorney? Maybe Gloria Allred will take this case on just for the public A-- kicking she would get to do.
That poor girl... Imagine the worst thing in your life happening to you and then getting slapped in the face for it.
If the medical supervisor has a daughter I hope she never has to go through this and then have her mom tell her to just have this baby of a "Rapist".
My god all she would have wanted was a hug..A far cry from a pair of hand cuffs.
stuff like this gets me fired up. who the HELL gave that medical supervisor the right to play god with a rape victim?
My heart and my love goes out to this young woman and her family. My anger and outrage goes out to this system. It allows certain people to be treated this way. Sometimes I wonder if women, particularly poor women, have any one representing their rights. What kind of religion does this so called medical supervisor have? It must be nice to think that you are good enough to impose your decisions on everyone else and play God!!!! She should be FIRED. May a very good, didicated attorney represent this young woman and hopefully, teach the system a LESSON !!!!
This is completely appalling. Ugh.
How the hell can any person, under any circumstances, deny another person medical care? It doesn't matter the type of care it is--when you swear an oath to care for and protect other people, it is your responsibility, no your moral obligation, to see that the patient's needs are taken care of. Because the needs of one person cannot be exemplified through another person, how can that medical supervisor even justify where she has that right to deny a RAPE VICTIM emergency contraception? The patient's NEED for it may be great, and yet the medical supervisor did not see to the patient's needs. Perhaps she doesn't mind using her tax dollars to fund welfare and other programs. Unexpectant pregnancies often leave a woman vulnerable and incapable of taking care of both an infant and herself, in addition to any other obligations she has, unless she is ultimately prepared to do so. Even then, it is extremely overwhelming. Incompetent systems....this angers me deeply.
This is unbelievable! Men should NOT have ANY say so in matters like this! I bet if MEN (the ones who oppose birth control, abortion, etc.) could become pregnant things like this wouldn't even be an issue!!!!
How dare these people impose their will and what they believe in on women in general!
I sure wish I were rich--if so, I'd spend the money on protecting these women and getting them the services they need.
