A Year-in-Review Message from Nancy Keenan

I just returned from a successful and exciting ten-day post-election trip to Colorado, Nevada, and Texas and I just have to tell you: there is definitely a pro-choice spirit in the air! From all parts of the country, I met supporters who have a renewed confidence and sense of optimism.

That is why I wanted to do one last year-end post to thank you all personally for all of your hard work and support! In fact, we have a lot more of you to thank this year – we welcomed more than 180,000 new online activists in 2006. Can you believe it? That’s an average of more than 3,400 new people a week. And there’s more:

We close the book on 2006 with an optimistic outlook as the incoming 110th Congress includes 23 pro-choice pickups in the House and three in the Senate. With our comprehensive political program, we took out anti-choice incumbents like J.D. Hayworth in Arizona’s 5th District and Mike Fitzpatrick in Pennsylvania’s 8th District. Overall, 75 percent of our endorsed candidates for the House and Senate won their races!

Even before the elections, pro-choice activism helped stop far-right congressional leaders when they tried to jam through a dangerous parental-notification measure – the “Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act” (CIANA) – on the very last day of the congressional session. In fact, in the wake of their election losses, anti-choice members of Congress even planned to hold a hearing on the so-called “Right to Life Act” but they left town before capitulating to the far-right once more before losing control of Congress.

At the state level, we partnered with our affiliates to defeat dangerous anti-choice ballot measures, including an abortion ban in South Dakota, and divisive parental-notification measures in California, and Oregon.

These are just some of the many reasons we have to celebrate. We’re proud of these achievements, and you should be too!

One election can’t change everything, but we move into 2007 in a stronger position to protect safe, legal abortion. Let’s work – and win – together in the New Year!

Best wishes for the holiday season,

Nancy Keenan
