NY pharmacists called out for refusing to fill prescriptions
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) has filed a complaint against three pharmacists who refused to refill prescriptions for emergency contraception. Yeah--refill. Get this:
What makes this case different from many other similar cases in the U.S. is the pharmacists weren't objecting to filling the initial prescription, just the refill, said Elisabeth Benjamin, Director of the NYCLU's Reproductive Rights Project. In most similar cases, pharmacists wouldn't fill the prescriptions at all based on religious and moral grounds, Benjamin said. "But these refusals seem to just be based solely on moralistic assumptions of women's sexuality."
Doctors will often give women advance prescriptions for EC because most of the time you need the drug--on the weekends or evenings--a pharmacy isn’t open.
According to the complaint filed, CVS pharmacist Matt Weaver not only refused to provide EC refills, but he also “altered the valid prescription so that it listed no refills.” Wow.
When Claudina Ashelman-Owen, who was trying to obtain her EC, complained to Weaver’s supervisor Andrea Barcomb she was told that women who needed EC were “irresponsible.”
Read the whole article, there's even more nonsense...

Geez, I just don't understand what all the fuss is over EC! Actually, I DO know what it's all about and it has to do with complete ignorance. Obviously the majority of Americans are blatantly ignorant about what EC is really made of and what it does. People seem to think that it's an abortion pill, but really it's just a higher dosage of the same chemicals found in your average birth control pill. I guess I could see why the average American wouldn't know this, but these pharmacists should understand EC better than anyone! I mean, they went to pharmacy school for God's sake! Don't tell me they didn't learn about birth control and EC when they were in pharmacy school! I used to be a nurse several years ago with a concentration in gynecology, and even I know the difference between EC and the abortion pill! I think the medical world needs to start educating the public about EC and teach everyone that it IS nothing more than birth control, just in a higher dosage. I've always said that ignorance can hurt you (or even kill you) and there's no excuse for not educating the American public on the facts about EC. And on a closing thought, have you ever wondered why pharmacists and other people throw up such a fuss over EC and birth control but they don't think twice about letting a man have a prescription for Viagra...even if it's a younger man who just wants it so that he can have an erection for two hours and have a bunch of one night stands? Why isn't anyone passing judgment on these men??
