2 Ways To Skin A Precedent

Scott Lemieux from Lawyers, Guns and Money is blogging for choice.

For those of you who don't read the long, boring articles, let me briefly summarize why Alito's elevation to the court will be extremely bad for reproductive rights, with links to some more detailed arguments. There are two viable possibilities, and both lead to exactly the same place. And for both outcomes, it is important to remember this fact, which is too often forgotten: abortion bans are always enforced in a grossly arbitrary and inequitable manner (cf. not only the pre-Roe period but the sky-high abortion rates in Latin America.) Affluent women, who have the resources to travel and the connections to know which doctors perform grey market abortions, will have access to abortion irrespective of the legal regime. The question is whether this access is will be given to all women, or whether some classes of women will have to resort to illegal abortions. Once we understand this, the implications of Alito's elevation are clear.

As an Evangelical, African American woman, I wish I could say that I am surprised by the President's nomination of Mr. Alito to the highest court in the land, but I am not. Frankly, nothing after the dismal failure of the U.S. Government's response to Katrina and the victims thereof will surprise me. With the wide array of qualified, compassionate, centrist judges at the disposal of Mr. Bush and the U.S. Congress to replace Sandra Day O'Connor (a centrist judge), this is who they put up for consideration for nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court - "A Right Wing Conservative." Well, I and the overwhelming majority (98%) of the African American Christian community have banned together to defeat the Republican control of all 3 branches of government along with their racist, fascist, and evil agenda. In addition, we are no longer going to subject ourselves to Mr. Bush's hypocritical claims of undying, unwavering faith & commitment to Christian values, then does everything in his power undermine, manipulate, and out and out defy the true teachings of Jesus Christ in his political actions. Neither Mr. Bush, nor the Republican Party talk the talk or walk the walk of Jesus Christ. They are in the tradition of the Pharaohs, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes of Biblical times whose divisive and destructive policies have never left our societies, even to this present day. They have been, are in, and shall always be in power because of the selfishness, greed, and complacency of each passing generation's people. Sadly and regrettably, my guess is that Alito will be confirmed and there isn't a damn thing anyone can do about it because of the Democrat/Republican grip on the power structure A/K/A "Good Cop/Bad Cop" strategy. We in the African American community are not and will not be fooled by the "Bipartisan Show" of polite civility that is being displayed in the confirmation hearings, its members, or that phony Mr. Alito. HE HAS ALREADY BEEN CONFIRMED!!! We are no longer looking to this society for answers, they have proven time and time again that they cannot and will not change. There is only one Power that I know of that is going to fix this society and HE is allowing this to happen to teach us, once and for all, what happens to societies that abdicate their power, ability to think, oppose, and/or resist absolute power by dictatorial rulers because of the aforementioned reasons and more. When that day comes, let it be the last day of oppressive rule in this nation and the nations of the world so that true peace and tranquility can reign.

Delia,
I love you! You have made the most perfect post here. Finally an Evangelical who has seen through the fog perpetrated by this bankrupt government. Bush, and his ilk, have NOTHING to do with Christian values. It is ALL about the values of the priviledged, and if that includes embracing extremist positions regarding women, and low income segments of our society, so be it.
They only put their asses into gear when they saw negative news posts regarding responce to Katrina.
Our bullshit governnment is only concerned with it's continued existence. Not the personal interrests of you, and me. You are correct. Alito will be confirmed not because of our personal concerns,as constitutents, but because that is how our disjointed government operates today. A total fucking{sorry for that} travesty.
I hope Americans of all persuasions, will start to wake up and demand that their country will be returned to them. Alas, history speaks otherwise.
