Supreme Court Media Blitz this week

NARAL Pro-Choice America is calling for Americans to get moving on the media in opposition to the Roberts nomination. So check out the call to action below and send the info to all your friends.

Did the radical right have undue influence over the nomination of anti-choice lawyer John Roberts? The word from the White House is: That's for us to know and you to find out!

Just last week the Bush administration not only broke with precedent to withhold the tax returns of Supreme Court nominee John Roberts from the public, they ALSO have not disclosed the reportedly numerous contacts between the White House and radical right organizations while Bush was deciding on a nominee.

The American public deserves the truth! So starting today, we're taking back the airwaves and demanding the truth about John Roberts.

Here’s what you can do to get involved:

In print: Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. If you’re not sure how to get started, take a look at these hints and a sample letter.

On the air: Take back the airwaves - take part in radio discussions about the Supreme Court battle. Use NARAL’s online media tool to find phone numbers and email addresses for your local stations.

Online: Make sure the blogosphere knows what's up. If you haven’t already, check out yesterday’s call to go choice-crazy in the comments section of some top political blogs.

Choice America Network released it online poll results and Editorial on Monday, August 1st regarding John Roberts. 93% of our respondants voted NO to Roberts. Choice America Network Editorial said NO to Roberts. Choice America Network has discovered, thru it's parent company, EvansMediaUSA, many unethical dealings of Roberts that lead to Cheney/Bush - if that is no surprise.

We support 100% NARAL Pro Choice America and will continue to do so. Without CHOICE we have no Freedoms in our America. We must stop this administration from infringing on our Freedoms and will continue to disclose information to a slowly awakening America, the LIES of G.W. Bush and company. We must all work together. We have found it amazing that many Republican women and men refuse to see the Big Picture. Though this "p"resident's numbers are dropping in the polls, many die hards still support this Administration's blatant LIES, therefore, we must work harder to Wake Up our fellow Americans before it is too late. Our "p"resident is criminal.

America's true Enemy is from within. Make no mistake about that.

Everyone who is pro-choice said the exact same things about David Souter before he was confirmed and the pro-choice lobby couldn't have a better advocate on the court today. The pro-choicers were wrong then and it is equally possible that you are wrong today. The truth is we simply don't know how John Roberts would vote on any given issue if he is confirmed to the court...and we won't know until he is sitting on the bench.

Precisely what question or questions did Choice America Network ask in the poll cited above? And what people did they poll? In an online poll it seems to me most of the respondents would be people who support the position taken by Choice America Network which would make it unreliable as a measure of what the general public think. As you well know it is extremely easy to fabricate polls today just by framing the question in a way that will produce the answer desired by the pollster. For that reason it is important to publish as much information about how the poll was conducted as possible, so people can be reasonably sure it is genuine.

Also the phraze "many unethical dealings of Roberts" is used without elaboration as is the phraze "LIES of G.W. Bush and company". It's important to document the dealings and lies in question rather than just dump and run, otherwise people will dismiss such unsubstantiated claims on the grounds that anyone can make them. Could it be that so many people are not seeing the "big picture" simply because they are not being shown it in a way that is convincing?

The Choice America Network poll is no more unreliable than a FOX NEWS poll based on your argument that "most of the respondents would be people who support the position taken" by the respective network. Yet FOX NEWS purport that when asked if there was “any way for the United States to avoid war with Iraq,” less than one-third of Americans believed that war could have been prevented; almost twice as many (62 percent) thought war was inevitable. Any survey can be construed to support a particular position and therefore unreliable as a measure of what the general public thinks.

Addionally conducting a poll and reporting its results in accordance with the requirements of random sampling should make that poll reliable, but will not necessarily make it valid. A poll is reliable if it can be replicated again and again, producing essentially the same result. A valid poll is an accurate description of what actually exists in the universe being examined. Any given survey could be reliable, or valid, or both.

A highly biased question may consistently produce the same response, but that does not make it an accurate description of the views of the respondents. On the other hand, the results reported by a poll may be accurate even though the methodology is faulty.
