Sen. Feinstein: Women’s rights are no joke
Oh how I love Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) these days. In response to some of John Roberts’ past comments on women and women’s rights, Sen. Feinstein is calling Roberts out on his supposed sense of humor.
Feinstein, the only woman on the Judiciary Committee, pointed to one memo in which Roberts, while disparaging state efforts to combat discrimination against women, wondered whether "encouraging homemakers to become lawyers contributes to the common good."
Oh, what a laugh! Women working outside the home?! That is funny! (Note sarcasm please.)
Sen. Feinstein is more forgiving than I am:
"Whether that was a joke, or whether it represents his real view, I don't know. We'll try and find out," she said.
Let’s hope so. Because as far as I’m concerned, women’s rights aren’t a laughing matter. Ever.

Maybe you havn't heard but that memo was for Linda Chavez, the highest ranking women in the White House at the time and a working mom. That being said, do you honestly believe it wasn't a joke about lawyers, but rather he was telling Linda to go back to the kitchen? By the way, Linda has acknowledged that it was in fact a joke.

I laughed when I read Roberts` comment, because I figured it was a lawyer joke -- but what the hell do I know, I`m just a homemaker. I thought it was open season on lawyers, especially in Washington. I think Feinstein needs to lighten up (full disclosure: I voted for her, and would do so again).

The joke a person tells often serves as a window to their inner psyche. If I told a joke here that disparages women's intelligence, I would {rightfully so} expect a torrent of indignance. Who am I to insult women would be the general themes. Why should this not apply to a judicial nominee as well? Lighten up? I don't think so. Not in these perilous times. As jessica has said, it is no laughing matter. I offer my full support to Sen. Feinstein. She will need that from all of us in the coming battle for women's rights and civil rights in general.

Yes, jokes often serve as windows to the joketeller`s inner psyche, but the key word is "often." Sometimes, a joke is just a joke. Roberts later married a lawyer himself.
If we lose the ability to laugh, the other side has scored a point. And I, for one, am not willing to concede that.

It's a LAWYER JOKE. You've gotta really stretch to make it anything else.
And besides, he's saying that her work as a homemaker is more valuable to society than being a bloodsucking lawyer. An opinion I happen to agree with.
