They'll probably take away their Playstations too
An article in the L.A. Times today reports on a taped conversation between far-right leaders, about new ways to deal with judges they don't like. The pesky judiciary seems set on doing its job, and not kowtowing to threats from politicians. The nerve of some people!
The taped conversation took place last month at a conference where both Rep. Tom Delay and Sen. Bill Frist spoke. On the agenda was "laying out strategies to rein in judges, such as stripping funding from their courts in an effort to hinder their work." Huh. A couple of choice quotes:
"There's more than one way to skin a cat, and there's more than one way to take a black robe off the bench," said Tony Perkins, president of the conservative Family Research Council, according to [the] audiotape..."
" 'We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse,' DeLay said at an April 13 question-and-answer session with reporters."
"[Perkins] said that instead of undertaking the long process of trying to impeach judges, Congress could use its appropriations authority to 'just take away the bench, all of his staff, and he's just sitting out there with nothing to do.' "
Wow, um, ok. This seems like a very fair strategy. Can't get judges to do what you want? Don't have any grounds to impeach them on? Just punish them, like children. Take away their allowance! Seems to me like this kind of strategy is a lot more obstructionist than blocking 10 out of 205 federal court nominees. But maybe it's just me...
