Oh, it’s on.
Rachel's back, with the latest on the "nuclear option." You can still help us try to stop it.
This is more suspenseful than “Rear Window,” except not in a fun way and Grace Kelly doesn’t come to visit. Every day it seems like we inch a little bit closer to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s mythic “nuclear option.” Today’s development is the Senate Judiciary Committee’s party-line approval of Judge Priscilla Owen, who’s been nominated for a seat on the federal court.
Judge Owen is one of a batch of judges who’ve been renominated by President Bush after having been blocked the first time around. In a show of “no one questions the great and mighty Oz,” Senator Frist has suggested that any one of these renominations could serve to trigger the “nuclear option.” Get those bunkers ready, people. It’s going to be a long summer.
Now, let me ‘splain something for a second here. The ranting right wing has called us every name in the book in an attempt to paint us as these awful intolerant meanies. Anyone who opposes Judge Owen is against women. Anyone who opposes Judge Janice Rogers Brown is against women AND African-Americans. And anyone who opposes Judge Pryor is against “people of faith.” Certainly there couldn’t be any other reasons. Certainly one can’t be a woman, or a woman of color, or a “person of faith” AND a bad choice for the federal court.
Seriously? Let’s take lessons about inclusion and tolerance from the far right. That makes about as much sense as learning about retirement planning from Enron... picking up hot stock tips from Martha... and maybe video editing tips from Paris Hilton.
