‘Security Moms’ a Myth
Ha! WomensENews reported today on so-called ‘security moms’—a new demographic being cited recently as the reason Kerry is supposedly losing ground with women. (Which just isn’t true.)
While the large number of news stories might make you think differently, it seems that opinion polls show no trend of ‘security moms’—married moms who are placing fears of terrorism at the top of their election-issue list.
Debbie Walsh from the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) says that women who fit this description are just your run of the mill rich white women who have been voting Republican since way before September 11th: “A lot of the women who fit into this category are Bush supporters to begin with…It’s a false concept.”
Well I’m glad someone else said it! As I’ve reported before, the idea that women are looking for some kind of daddy figure to protect them from the big, bad terrorists is just insulting. Women—like all Americans—are naturally concerned with safety, but we care about a lot more than that! What happened to discussions on the economy and health care…and excuse me—reproductive rights?!
The reality is that polls show Kerry with a definite lead among women voters—even in swing states. Take that, faux security moms.
